Though I generally avoid dealing with Folk as a genuine genre, let alone when bands engage folk elements in their musical production – especially when they serve the extreme metal genre – an interesting album fell into my hands entitled “The Void: Stories from the Whispering Well,” released in March 2015 by an emerging band called Wormwood. Was it the title? Was it the band’s name? Were the subjects of the lyrical themes the ones that made me pay attention? I don’t know. In the end of the day I was convinced to listen to their debut EP and it seems that my decision was right. Wormwood not only convinced me about their music, but they made me look forward to their next step. And that’s what happened. About a month ago, “Ghostlands – Wounds From a Bleeding Earth” was released via Non Serviam Records, which confirmed and justified the confidence I/ we showed towards the band. It’s a record based on a fairly multispectral view of Melodic Black Metal, with a lot of folk and progressive elements, a rock ‘n’ roll finesse and a light yet ubiquitous Ambience dressed in a deep atmospheric veil in the compositions. Every listening session of “Ghostlands”, precisely due to the orchestration, performance, bonding among the members, the compositions themselves being exemplary, lead me to a never-ending trip to the icy mountains of Sweden, where the luxuriation in your ‘is’ and the expansion of your imagination are automatically triggered. This intensity is increased by the track order. This inner sequence, structures and builds continuously, until the album reaches its peak. Excellent detail, the use of female vocals in some pieces; they lift the final result even higher with the variety of colors they offer. It’s obvious that “Ghostlands” is a greatly weighed record, with the members and anyone involved in creating it, showing special attention on every aspect. “Ghostlands – Wounds From a Bleeding Earth” is one of the most interesting releases for 2017, with a special dynamic and personality. It wins you from the first moment and raises the bar for the next release of the band. It is an experience that everybody deserves to have. The cover of the album is a creation by Mario Polzin. The recording was made by Sverker Widgren (Demonical, Diabolical) at Wing Studios.
