Genre: Occult Vintage Rock
Country: Sweden
Label: Napalm Records
Year: 2014

After their previous magnificent full length album (“Angels’ Necropolis”), Year of the Goat have nothing to prove. They are among the elite bands of the so called vintage rock genre. Now that they moved to Napalm Records they probably had to make a quick release before their next album. You got to play by the rules in order to survive. Hence, this 3-song EP… 2 and a half song EP to be more accurate!

The quality of the songs is not questionable;the motivation behind this release is what troubles me. I mean it really doesn’t offer anything new to their fans. This EP consists of two songs that are 100% super-duper rock anthems, but follow the same patterns as their previous album. The homonymous song has a Ghost touch and some Rory Gallagher guitar riffs here and there, while Mystic Mountains has a more Lynyrd Skynyrd feeling. The last song, Non-Euclidean Calculus, is a solo keyboard instrumental that could serve as an intro or as a great initial idea to further work on. What I would really like to hear is other bands and music producers trying to remix it or cover it. This Per Wiberg-meets-Yanni-meets-Bob Katsionis track offers this potential and I would happily pay to have an album with remixes of this song.

3.5/6
