When it comes to horror Italy leads the scene both visually and acoustically. The works of Mario Bava (and son Lamberto), Dario Argento, Lucio Fulci, Ruggero Deodato and Michele Soavi have never been matched in the big screen. In the musical part, Death SS, Black Hole, Sacrilege, Paul Chain, Abysmal Grief and many others have given us plenty of shivers and chills with their spooky music through the years. Now it’s time for some forgotten Italian history to be surfaced. Doom (Horror) metallers Epitaph comes to join the black mass!

This band literally crawled out of its crypt. After their formation in 1987 they released only three demos and faded silently into obscurity. Now after 27 years they present to us their work through high roller records. Nicola Murari on bass and Mauro Tollini on drums also played in the legendary ‘Land Of Mystery’ album of Black Hole (as Nicholas Murray and Luther Gordon respectively). Lorenzo Loatellion guitars and Emiliano Cioffi (of the great epic/doom band All Souls’ Day) on vocals complete the line-up.

The album consists of eight songs (the vinyl edition has one more as bonus) both old and new ones. As doom metal veterans they know their game quite well! Although the songs are over six minutes long the album flows nicely. The changes in the rhythm, the classic metal solos, and the expressiveness of singer Emiliano as well the use of some keyboards and organ all contribute to the creation of a haunting, 100% pure DOOM metal experience! Although I can’t find a moment of mediocrity if I had to choose the best songs on ‘Crawling Out Of The Crypt’ they would be ‘Beyond The Mirror’, ‘Ancient Rite’, Sacred And Prophane (With the participation of singer Gianni Nepi of the legendary Dark Quarterer), ‘Necronomicon’ and ‘Confuse The Light’. This not only a great doom metal record. It’s Italian metal legacy. A must for fans of the Italian metal scene as well as Candlemass, Trouble and Saint Vitus. Doom metal supremacy!
