Genre: Doom/sludge metal
Label: Fucking Your Creation Records
Yes I know that you are used to more extreme things from me, but this time, we are staying within the sludge sound, continuing from my last review. So today we have Gomgoma, a doom/sludge band from Chalkida, Greece. Their latest EP, is actually a collection, released in April on tape, by Wrath’s Fucking Your Creation Records. This EP, as I wrote above, is a collection of their two EPs from 2015, titled “Efflorescent Graveyards”. The band was formed in 2010 and so far they have given us, those two EPs, a demo before those and now this collection. Let’s dive into it…
Regarding the sound, they have all the basic ingredients that are need to qualify as a doom/sludge band. Low guitar tuning and I mean LOW, slow songs and a pretty heavy production. In this collection, we will not find anything different from the original releases, something like a remaster for example. It is just a collection of the 2 EPs as they were at first, so if you have already listened to those, you know what to expect. The new thing, is that we have a bonus track, a cover on a song by Entombed, specifically “Wolverine Blues”, live from their show on the 7th of July, 2011.
Playing wise, one thing I can say with absolute certainty, is that the band knows how to play the genre they represent very very well. They are well-rehearsed and I can be sure of that as I saw them at the show from which the bonus track is taken from and all the songs are well played and properly recorded, which is the most important thing, correct? Entombed’s friends, go for it without any second thoughts. Those of you who are not familiar with this genre, expect a “dirty” sound, but with a good meaning of course, the result of the low tuning on the guitars, vocals that reminded me a bit of Phil Anselmo from the “The Great Southern Trendkill” era and a very good sound and production, difficult from this kind of music, but it is the proof that Gomgoma know what they are doing.
