Grindcore/black-death metal in the most evil way..personaly i love it and im here with the vocalist Christian to explain us what the hell is happening in this band! Christian hope all are fine with you, give us an idea about the born of Keitzer.

– Hi Leonidas, thanx for the interview!

We’re all good and really happy with the very positive reactions on our new album “The Last Defence”.
We exist since 1999, almost in the same line up; only our 2nd guitarplayer Nicolai joined later in 2007 as exchange for founding member Claas. We have been putting out albums and splits on a regular basis, In 2001 our debut LP “…to destroy the planet earth” was released, followed by the split EP w/ Remains of the Day in 2003. After two European Tours in 2001 and 2003, both with Remains of the Day, we released “Suicide Anthology” in 2005. During the years we played a lot of shows and a Germany-Tour with polish grinders Antigama in 2006, we released the limited split 3″CD with DAS KRILL which came out on 7” vinyl in 2008 as well. We recorded “As the world burns” in 2008. The same year we played the Maryland Deathfest and some shows on the US-east coast together with the just re-united Japanische Kampfhörspiele, the infamous Obscene Extreme in Czech Republic and Eindhoven’s Bloodshed Fest. In January 2009 we toured with German Death-Thrashers MINION across Germany and later interpreted Nasum’s “A Welcome Breeze of Stinking Air” for the “A Tribute To NASUM”-Sampler. In 2011 our latest LP-“Descend into Heresy”- came out, followed by a new appearance at the Bloodshedfest at legendary Dynamo Club. Then in 2012 we once again hit the stage of the Obscene Extreme! Now it’s 15 years later, and album #5 is out now…

You made a new album “The last defence”released through F.D.A rekotz ,tell us few things about the recording season and the lyrical themes.

– The recordings just took us 5 days on 2 weekends in fall 2013 with Jörg Uken at Soundlodge Studio. We were very god prepared as we concentrated on songwriting and practicing for the new songs the whole year, so we knew what we wanted and didn’t have to fuck around too long in the studio. Jörg is a great guy and a total pro, so he did an awesome job and made the record sound pretty much exactly as we wanted it to sound. The atmosphere was relaxed what made studio work a really good time. Mix and mastering was also done in another 3 days by Jörg.

Lyrically the album deals with war, mainly from a more medieval, crusade era. It’s not a concept album, telling no cohesive story, but all lyrics are dealing with this. Basically it’s about the madness and insanity that leads to war and the aftermath, which can only be death and destruction. Looking at the world right now it couldn’t be more up to date, I guess. Really disturbing times everywhere…

Your name Keitzer as i know it means emperor, which was the motivation to use this kind of name?

– Some of us are big Star Wars Fans, it’s inspired by Emperor Palpatine. We took the Dutch translation because we lived real close to the Netherlands back then. The T is because it sounds so much harsher. We started out as a side project, but the name really grew on us, as well as now it’s our main band.

From your music someone can notice that you are listening many kinds of metal/grindcore,give us few names of bands that are your biggest inspiration.

– Oh I’m not too much into that namedropping but I’d say Bolt Thrower, Mörser, Acme, Nasum, Systral, Suffocation, Reversal of Man, Marduk, Discordance Axis and on and on surely had a big influence on us…

On stage you have a really powerful performance, which was and where one of the best moments you had on a live show?!

– Well, the best shows are always when people go crazy and you feel the energy exchanging between band and audience. That’s fun. Small sweaty clubs are best for that. Areally great show we just had recently at Grind The Nazi Scum Festival In Torgau/ Germany, people just went crazy… another show that’s still in our minds is in Bologna/ Italy in 2003, the place was packed as hell, outside there were as many people as inside but couldn’t get in, and there was no moment without somebody crowdsurfing, just insane…

What your opinion about the grindcore scene in Germany? About bands-events-festivals…

– I have the impression that it was bigger some years ago, but it’s still quite strong and familiar. You see friends on every occasion. There are some good fests like Grind the nazi scum, grind here-right now, Draeshfeshd. The scene is strong connected to other scenes, so basically everywhere you go in europe, it’s like a family meeting… Lots of bands are active as well like Wojczech, Attack of the Mad Axeman, Who’s my saviour, Cyness just to name a few…

You think that the label is really important for an underground band or the only thing that matters is the power of the band itself?

– The label is really important. Labels have the better connections to the press, distributors etc, and it is a lot of work to do deal with that. Of course success of a band depends as well on the quality and dedication of the band. If a band is doing nothing at al l to promote their music, even the best label can’t do too much to push you. But we know that with a honest and hardworking label in the back it makes everything a lot easier, I guess. Now with FDA f.e., who is steadily growing and a constant size in the deathmetal underground, we get a lot more response than before…

Which are your touring plans??

-It’s always hard for us to make tourplans as we’re all tightly bound to our families and jobs… we’ll play a couple of shows in the next few months, like Sept. 20th in Osnabrück (D) with our buddies in Attack of the Mad Axeman, which is our releaseshow so to speak…thenm a grindfeast with mumakil and holocausto cannibal amongst others in Arnhem(NL) on Nov. 22 and I think more are confirmed, as well we’re in negotiation with a few bigger fests abroad…

Ok now i will talk a little personaly if you dont mind. For me Keitzer is something unique in the grindcore scene. Its a band that mixing the most evil side ofmetal, specialy from black metal and the most powerful side of grindcore with some oldschool death metal parts…What you think about this, its something you tried to do it,to build an I.D or is just happen!?!

– I guess it just happened. We write songs that we have to like first, that means that all our musical influences flow into the songwriting. We all grew up with classic metal and hc-punk, developing further to get into the more extreme kinds of music like thrash, death, grind etc. We surely don’t reinvent the wheel, but the mix of all the music that we love has given our sound a certain recogition value. I mean we’re playing this style since 15 years now, I guess it developed all pretty naturally…

Christian thank you for this nice talk, last words are yours and send a message to all those who HATE Keitzer (come on lets be a little BAD!). Cheers brother!

– Thanx for your support, it’s highly appreciated! Go get the new album “The Last Defence” and enjoy the blasting. Book us for shows, we’ve never been to greece… buy us beer…
