Genre: Thrash, Groove, Heavy, Punk
Release: November, 2019
Quite a unique album has popped from Athens and more specifically from Peristeri, by quite a unique band called Ohentra. The band released their first full-length album, “Penthos” last November (an EP titled “Iera Nosos” in 2015 preceded this release). “Penthos” consists of seven tracks, it’s almost half an hour in length, and as the title suggests, both musically and lyrically, we will move into a dark world, a world that will create a train of thoughts and make us confront reality. The album begins with the introductory instrumental “Penthos”, which probably represents the calm before the thunderstorm that’s about to be cast upon us. Musically speaking, Ohentra balance between many ropes, probably due to the different artistic influences of its members. One can easily discern that the backbone of “Penthos” is the thrash metal genre, however given through the perspective crust bands have, mixed with some hardcore elements (for example in “Ti Stigmi Pou Ola Teleionoun” one could easily fit a beatdown), while there are times when things get more melodic. The different rhythms between the tracks give the whole album variety and make every listening session interesting and easy. The lyrical themes used by Ohentra attaches a certain punk-ish quality to the band, as the home punk scene was / is dealing with similar themes (right on!). Probably the most distinctive feature of Ohentra is the choice of the Greek-speaking lyrics. It takes guts to make such a choice and I hope that this won’t act as a hindrance to the transmission of their music across borders. The disposition to preserve the Greek language is also evidenced by the title of the album, where Ohentra is translated into the Greek word ochentra, which in common Greek translates to the well-known serpentine “Viper”. The album was released as a CD with a full 12-page booklet, where we can find all the lyrics of the songs. The recording, mixing and mastering processed were handled by David Prudent at Made In Hell Studios in 2018.
Ohentra are: Christos Trikos (vocals, guitar) Stathis Nikitopoulos (vocals, rhythm guitar), Lefteris Evmorfopoulos (bass) and Stelios Pepinidis (drums).
