Possessed Steel are a quartet from Toronto, Canada established almost a decade ago. They have released a demo back in 2010, a 5 track self-titled EP in 2014 and after that unfortunately, the band took a year-long hiatus, flirting with the possibility of breaking up. In 2015 they reunited and two years later they released their sophomore EP “Order of the Moon” that actually featured some older ideas reworked and re-recorded. Finally 2020 was the year the band achieved to record their debut full-length; “Aedris” that was out on November 30th, 2020 via Temple of Mystery Records.
The album is a concept one. Aedris is the name of the story’s hero. He is a guardian and the last of his ancient generation. He is also the only one that can carry the Possessed Steel, which is a sword of incredible strength, that its blade is made of black unicorn horn and forged in his hot blood. Who he has the sword must give his/her soul and thoughts to the sword. It is also the only weapon capable of exterminating the Sullen Architects. Who are they? They are three siblings of Aedris and creators of the world, that for some reason begin to destroy it and it is Aedris the one that must stop them.
So lyrically speaking the band seems ambitious. And this concept of Aedris mission suits well to their music. Musically speaking whoever likes melodic riffs, epic doom metal bands like Cromlech, Pagan Altar, Slough Feg, Brocas Helm, high fantasy 80’s heavy/power metal, epic feeling, old Blind Guardian, Iron Maiden, folk elements, dual guitars, Cirith Ungol, Omen, Visigoth and Dio, well… must buy the album…yesterday!!! Overall, Possessed Steel’s first album should sit well with those who like their heavy metal with some extra theater to it. Please notice that they dabble in harsh vocals and slightly blackened elements at times to set them apart from bands like Eternal Champion, Megaton Sword, etc. that beyond this element, have similar sound though.
