There’s no better way to understand the growth and the evolution of a band than by following their early steps from playing in small clubs to opening for big names in huge festivals. The demo recordings and the raw sound of the early performances can be so revealing for Riot too. A name that should be next to legends and commercially ought to have larger sales as their albums overflow with quality and heavy metal anthems. Nevertheless Riot are more than cult heroes and even after Reale’s death, their fifth version aka Riot V, has offered many excellent songs and 2 brilliant albums. This collection is definitely substantial. We follow Riot from the very first steps as the group formed in 1975, in New York City, when Kon-Tiki guitarist Mark Reale and drummer Peter Bitelli teamed up with bassist Phil Feit and vocalist Guy Speranza. We can hear the songs from the first 4 track demo -that made the producers Billy Arnell and Steve Loeb, who owned the independent label Fire-Sign Records to sign them- live as we see the development that converted the 4 piece group from a thirsty for rock ‘n roll band to a having a contract with major label Capitol Records one and from playing in small stages to British shores and a U.K. tour supporting Sammy Hagar and later to the billing of Monsters of Rock Festival at Castle Donington the same year, under Saxon, Judas Priest, Scorpions and headliners Rainbow. The Official Bootleg Box Set Volume 1 contains 57 tracks and captures Riot full of tense and passion in 2 sets in Red Foxx, in New Jersey in 1976, 11 tunes from a live set in The Agora Ballroom, Painesville, Ohio in 1978, some recordings from 2 shows in Atlanta and Boston in 1980 and their set from Bristol, U.K. in 1980 on the aforementioned Sammy Hagar support tour, probably a bit immature but not naïve, where much of their repertoire included songs by the bands that had influenced them, such as their covers on Montrose’s ‘I Got the Fire’, ‘Good Rockin’ Tonight’ and ‘Rock Candy’, to UFO’s ‘Shoot Shoot’ and Deep Purple’s ‘Highway Star’, included amongst Riot originals, ‘Angel’, ‘Overdrive’ and ‘Tokyo Rose’. The box set concludes with the Castle Donington slot in 1980. A fair price of 22 euro is just right for this raw treasure.
