The Dark Element recently released their sophomore album, “Song the Night Sings”. For those who don’t know, TDE is Insomnium’s Jani Liimatainen and Nightwish’s ex-vocalist Anette Olzon new project band. They released their first album in 2017 and received some decent words, especially for the fact that Anette Olzon was justified as a singer after five years with Nightwish, when a large amount of fans were unhappy. However, TDE’s tunes are more moderate and melodic, with solid alternations between symphonic and power elements. Basically, to be honest, the album is very similar to Anette’s first Nightwish album, “Dark Passion Play”. Epic, but with the axis turning to power metal, without much symphonic elements. It’s not that different from their debut, but it is definitely more well-prepared. Both Jani and Anette seem to have found what suits them best musically. The album’s momentum is “Not Your Monster”, for sure. Looking at it in verse, you realize it’s a furious farewell letter from Jani and Anette to Sonata Arctica and Nightwish respectively. Some tracks like “Silence Between the Words”, “The Whatever End” and “I Have to Go” give the filler feel however. Very “flat” tracks, really Eurovision-like, I don’t know how to express it any other way. I hope for better luck next time, because the team rocks.
